Play “Cries from the Land” gets rave reviews from Ottawa audiences
 - and snubs from the CBC
The play "Cries from the Land" sponsored by Canpalnet-Ottawa and Canadian Friends of Sabeel was a tremendous success. Over 500 people attended during the four day run of the play and the final night was completely sold out. Those attending included heads of churches, NDP candidate Monia Mazigh, diplomats from the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade, several ambassadors and members of both the Palestinian and Jewish communities who stood together and applauded every show.

Although a press release was issued a week prior to the opening night of May 18th and again just before the event, organizers were surprised when no response was received from the CBC. More...

Righteous Jews -- Israel's uncomfortable voices of dissent
"Unlike Palestinians and internationals, righteous Jews cannot be libeled with the impotent epithet "anti-Semites." They are a living indictment of the political failure of the Zionist state, and of the moral bankruptcy of Zionism itself."  More...

Letter to Ottawa Citizen:
Ashamed of Being Canadian

Gaza in Pictures

With Impunity
Why does Israel seem to feel, and indeed act, as if it is above the law? I shall offer three answers: Western collective guilt over WWII atrocities; Israel’s hiding behind the name of Judaism; lack of challenge within the Jewish communities to Israel’s wrong doings.

Israeli troops die as refugee homes are destroyed
Incursion in Gaza met by fierce resistance and condemnation
Four more Israeli soldiers were killed in the Gaza strip yesterday as the military began razing hundreds of refugee homes in what the government called a security operation but critics described as retaliation for some of the worst casualties of the intifada. An Israeli member of parliament called the destruction a war crime.

An opinion poll in yesterday's Yediot Ahronot news-paper showed public support for Mr Sharon's plan had surged in recent days. More than 70% of Israelis backed the removal of settlers. More...

EU, UN urge Israel to stop razing homes in Gaza refugee camp
UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan on Friday strongly condemned the destruction, urging Israel to stop its "violation of international law."

Annan cited reports of the demolition "of scores of buildings over the last two days, in addition to 130 residential buildings already destroyed this month." More...

Abu Ghraib and Falluja—a familiar kind of terror
When the allies defeated Nazi Germany in 1945, it did not defeat Nazism—the idea that one people could commit unspeakable acts of cruelty on another people in the name of a political ideology. This hatred found new ground in Israel, where for decades Zionists have been practising collective punishment, humiliation and murder against Palestinians in the Occupied Territories. More...

Body parts for ransom and a prisoner on a leash
A Palestinian-Canadian’s reflections

Last night, as I tossed and turned in bed - haunted by the image of a naked Iraqi Prisoner of War being led around on a leash, feeling sick in my stomach as I thought of the grieving parent of the 8 year old girl who was shot by British troops in Iraq, and wondering whether or not it is justified to exchange the body parts of dead Israeli soldiers to save the lives of the Palestinian living dead who crowd Israeli jails - the bare and naked truth of my world hit me.

"From academic boycott to economic sanctions, every possible means
should be considered and employed in the West: their governments are
no less responsible than Israel for the past, present and future
catastrophes of the Palestinian people. Putting pressure on Israel
is a small price to pay for the sake of global peace, regional
stability and reconciliation in Palestine."  - Ilan Pappe, professor

The Media and the Palestinians
It is no secret that the North American media has played a major role in the unresolved assault on the Palestinian people. The pro-Israel bias is evident throughout the print and television media, not so much by what is said but by what is not said: the history and context of the crisis is never presented.

The public has been led to believe that this is a hopeless endless war with both sides to blame. This is a blatant fabrication to discredit the legitimacy of the Palestinian struggle and downplay the urgency of stopping obvious crimes against humanity.  More...

Canada’s hate laws have selective application
Attacks such as the one in Pickering reinforce community fear and anxiety because mosques are not simply places of worship but also social and community centers. Is this our Canada? Apparently, since the government did not deem this attack to be worthy of comment. More...
