June 19, 2010Independent Jewish Voices condemns “feeding frenzy” around NDP Member of Parliament Libby Davies.
“What’s next?”asked IJV-C spokesperson Larry Haiven. “Will Canadian politicians have to take a loyalty oath to the State of Israel in order to hold office? The feeding frenzy is outrageous. Libby Davies is one the bravest and most honest politicians in Canada. She has done more for a just peace between Israelis and Palestinians than any other Canadian politician. ”
....The next day the interview appeared on YouTube. But in 24 hours it had gone nowhere – just 28 views. Then the most vociferous supporter of Israel in the NDP caucus, Thomas Mulcair, got wind of it and it escalated out of control. He went on a relentless campaign to punish Libby. The spin he helped create was that if Libby believed the occupation began in 1948 then she, ipso facto, believes that Israel has no right to exist. Libby has always gone to great lengths to make it clear that she supports Israel’s right to exist and the two-state solution endorsed by the NDP. But suddenly Jack Layton was in full-panic mode. He apologized to the Israeli ambassador. He hung Libby out to dry. He forced her to issue a public apology.
[Yes, folks you read it right - Jack Layton apologized to the Isreali ambassador because one of his MPs had the gall to exercise her right of free speech and tell the truth.]
said that she thinks the Israeli occupation began in 1948. Well,
it did. I can introduce you to Palestinians living here in
Vancouver who were forced out of their homes at gunpoint by Jews in
1948 and their villages destroyed. That’s occupation. It
happened. Denying it doesn’t change a thing. Just look at
this map on the left here of the 1947 UN partition plan....

Myths and Facts about the Gaza Freedom Flotilla Raid
1. MYTH - The ship Mavi Marmara was owned by IHH a Turkish charity with links to terrorism
Fact - First, IHH e.v has also been active in Germany, which ran a thorough investigation of all Islamic charity networks in Germany, including IHH. Despite great effort and careful research supported by Turkish government, no link to any organization that even ideologically supports forms of active resistance of any sort was found. The organization is pacifist, denying employment to any one who embraces even symbolic violence. [Source]
Fact - The Israeli government was forced to remove its website's allegations about al Qaeda links when U.S. State Department spokesman P.J. Crowley admitted that the U.S. "cannot validate" any such claim, and that the Turkish humanitarian organization coordinating the ship's voyage "has not been designated as a Foreign Terrorist Organization by the United States." 2. MYTH - Israeli soldiers were attacked by activists
Fact - The crack of an Israeli sound grenade and a hail of rubber bullets from above were supposed to disperse activists, but instead set them in motion. And when three Israeli commandos slid down ropes out of helicopters to take over the ship, a crowd set upon them. [Source - NY Times]Fact - Gaza flotilla activists were shot in head at close range [Source - The Guardian UK]
Fact - Everyone on all of the ships was completely unarmed, he said. However, on the Turkish ship -- where the civilian fatalities occurred -- some passengers clashed with the soldiers and tried to beat them up as they descended on the ship. (Larudee was on a different vessel.) "But that is akin to what the passengers on the hijacked 9/11 did to hijackers who had taken the aircraft," he said. "In other words, they resisted someone who was invading their ship." [Source - Salon, US]
3. MYTH - Israel allows all necessary aid into Gaza
Fact - The World Health Organization (WHO) says Israel is blocking vital medical supplies from entering the Gaza Strip. The U.N. agency says it is impossible to maintain a well-functioning health system if necessary supplies are not available. [Source - Voice of America]
4. Irrelevant claim - Israel claims that because the stated goal of the Free Gaza Movement was to break the blockade it was not a humanitarian act.
Fact - There is an exact parallel in the actions of the early lunch counter sit-ins of the U.S. civil rights movement: while the freedom workers may well have been hungry when they sat down, their goal was not to be served coffee but to end segregation. Of course the ship's voyage was a political act, repeated by the Rachel Corrie a few days later: to respond to Israel's politically-driven humanitarian catastrophe and to achieve a humanitarian goal - ending the crippling blockade of Gaza. Reports from the Canadian media - Note the bias of the reports. Be sure to check the reader comments on the CBC and Globe and Mail articles - Canadians are not foooled by the Israeli apologist spin.
Article of the year so far - The following is an astounding article coming from what one would think would be a right wing publication. It is short but covers a lot of ground in a few words.
yesterday's brazen act of piracy, Israel dealt a blow to the legitimacy
of its own struggle.... Israel claims the activists had links
with extremist groups and that some attacked Israeli soldiers with
knives and sticks (and in some accounts the odd light firearm). Even if
true, this would not justify the illegal capture of civilian ships
carrying humanitarian aid in international waters, let alone the use of

Here's a good-news story out of Montreal: Grassroots Jewish leaders are standing up to B'nai Brith's cynical campaign to convince the world that Canada is a cesspool of violent anti-Semitism.
I last wrote about B'nai Brith in January when the organization issued a bizarre press release comparing the lack of female ski jumpers at the 2010 Vancouver Olympics to the policies of Adolf Hitler. This was part of a pattern of hysteria at BB, I noted: "Every year, B'nai Brith puts out an 'audit' of anti-Semitic incidents in Canada.

EI - Defying appeal from Gaza students, Atwood set to accept Israeli prize
Phillip Weiss - Not only did Atwood and Ghosh choose to accept the cash, they used the occasion to launch a diatribe against the BDS strategy. I didn’t want to publicise their screed by linking to it, but I will, because it makes our argument for us... Ghosh and Atwood imply that the boycott is self-righteous and propagandistic.
