| September 10, 2004 From: Linda Belanger To: CBC - Ombudsman ; CBC - Communications ; CBC - SUNDAY ; CBC - The National (Producer); CBC President, Robert Rabinovitch ; CBC VP William B. Chambers Sent: Monday, August 30, 2004 4:47 PM Subject: Lying by Omission Dear CBC: Over the summer months, I have watched the National when I can and searched your website but have been unable to find news on the destruction of Beit Hanoun that took place at the beginning of August 2004. There is no excuse for this omission. If Israel will not allow journalists into the Gaza strip, could you please tell us. This would be news in itself. Perhaps you could do a story on the many journalists who have been killed or wounded by Israeli forces. Also, even if Israel does not allow journalists into Gaza there are aid organizations and the U.N. that could provide information. The attached document is a UN report on Beit Hanoun. Why is it that the official Israeli government statements are good enough for the media but statements from other organizations including the UN are ignored. Also, on your website there does not appear to be any coverage of the hunger strike by Palestinian Prisoners other than on August 16th when it began. Again, there are organizations that have come out in support of the strikers. I realize that you are under a great deal of pressure from powerful players who wish to advance the interests of Israel at the expense of justice and International Law. However, I would like to remind you that the CBC belongs to all Canadians and that your obligation is to them. Yours truly, Linda Belanger Ottawa, ON The full report and a map is in the attached .pdf document. Northern Gaza Strip, August 2004 – A preliminary assessment of the effects of the Israeli operation “Forward Shield,” in the northern Gaza Strip, particularly in Beit Hanoun, shows that Beit Hanoun and neighbouring areas suffered considerable damage. This report covers the period 29 June to 5 August 2004. Your Comments canpalnet-ottawa.org |
