Mark Ellis - Does Judaism Equal Israel

A Jewish Theologian Speaks Out

Nov. 16, 2009 at 7:30 p.m.

147 Fauteux Hall, University of Ottawa, 57 Louis Pasteur

Marc Ellis is the author of Judaism Does Not Equal Israel. He is the Director of the Center for Jewish Studies at Baylor University and the author of 15 books. Reviewing Jewish theology and culture, he shows the problems inherent in Zionism and especially with the ways Israeli governments have interpreted it to oppress Palestinians. He calls on Jews to become what he calls "Jews of Conscience," to reaffirm our values and ethics. And he calls on Christians to reject the false "ecumenical deal" which has required uncritical support for Israel. The future not only of Judaism but of Israel itself, he argues, hinges on a fundamental shift in Israel's treatment of Palestinians and on a new direction in the peace process.
