Dear Prime Minister Harper,

I am writing to you on behalf of the 54,000 members of the Canadian Union of Postal Workers.  You will be aware that the Israeli navy, in an act of piracy in international waters, has hijacked the international flotilla of ships which was attempting to deliver essential humanitarian aid to Gaza.  The aid includes construction materials which would enable the people of Gaza to rebuild the homes destroyed by Israel in Operation Cast Lead in 2009.

There are nearly 700 people on board the boats, all of whom are civilians from around the world, including Members of Parliament from a number of nations, eminent writers and a Nobel Peace Prize winner. They have undertaken this mission out of concern for the people of Gaza, who are now entering their fourth year under siege, without access to basic necessities. They pose no threat to Israel, and are completely unarmed.

Despite this, the Israeli navy has attacked the flotilla outside of international waters this morning resulting in fatalities estimated by the Israeli military itself as 10 and by news sources at possibly in excess of 20 with another large number injured. Israeli news sources say that hospitals around Ashdod have been told to prepare for many injured people arriving.

I urge you to act swiftly to condemn this attack on the peace flotilla, which was breaking no international laws, and, that you demand to know the fate of those on board the vessels and to ensure that Israel releases the vessels immediately to allow this vital aid to reach its destination. Since Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is in Canada and has profusely praised you for maintaining strong relations with Israel, the Canadian Union of Postal Workers believes that you have an obligation to condemn this brutal attack.

Israel's occupation of Gaza is illegal under international law, and it has been accused in a UN report of committing war crimes in Gaza.

Your obligation must be towards a group of citizens peacefully attempting to deliver humanitarian aid, than to a country which repeatedly violates international treaties.  CUPW calls on you to end the government's silence over Israel's aggressive actions against the flotilla, and intervene now to demand its safe passage to Gaza.

CUPW is calling on you to condemn this wanton act of piracy against the peaceful flotilla taking aid to the people of Gaza.  Finally, CUPW is calling upon you to take every step possible to bring about an end to the inhuman treatment of the people of Gaza by acting to end the siege and blockade that is taking place against them by the Israeli Government.

Yours sincerely,

2. CUPE letter

The following is a letter written by Paul Moist, CUPE National President, to Prime Minister Stephen Harper, urging the Canadian government to condemn the brutal attack by the Israeli navy today. Ten people were killed in the attack on a humanitarian aid convoy and dozens are injured.

May 31, 2010

Dear Prime Minister Harper,

Re: Israeli attack on Gaza Freedom Flotilla

I am writing to you on behalf of the 600,000 members of the Canadian Union of Public Employees. It is deeply disturbing to learn that the Israeli navy, in international waters, attacked the humanitarian aid convoy killing ten and possibly more human rights activists and injuring dozens more. It is an outrageous violation of international law and I urge the Canadian government to condemn this brutal attack.

The flotilla of ships was carrying essential humanitarian aid to Gaza including construction material for rebuilding homes destroyed by Israel in Operation Cast Lead in 2009. The International Red Cross has reported that thousands of Gazans are still without shelter because Israel refuses to allow cement and other materials into Gaza. They also note that hospitals are still unable to meet the needs of patients due to a lack of medical supplies.

There were nearly 700 people on board the boats from around the world, including Members of Parliament from a number of nations, and Irish Nobel Peace Prize winner Mairead Maguire. This mission was undertaken out of concern for the living conditions of the people of Gaza. It is beyond belief that the Israeli navy would act so violently.

The Canadian government must call for the Israeli government to conduct an immediate investigation into this action and to make public immediately the rules of engagement issued to the troops who carried out this lethal attack.  e must know the fate of those on board the vessels and ensure that Israel allow this aid to reach its destination. With Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in Canada it is vital that the Government of Canada convey to him Canada’s condemnation of such a horrific act.

CUPE supports a solution to the ongoing conflict that allows Palestinians and Israelis to live in peace. We condemn all acts of violence which make that peace more elusive.

Canada is in a position to take leadership in working to end the inhumane treatment of the people of Gaza and we are asking our government to do just that.

Yours truly,

Paul Moist
National President
Canadian Union of Public Employees

Dear Prime Minister:

I am writing to urge you to quickly condemn the attack by Israel on an international flotilla early Monday and to urge you to intervene to demand that flotilla be permitted to deliver the desperately needed humanitarian aid to the people of Gaza.  The Canadian government must add its voice to the international community of nations that is demanding an immediate, full and independent enquiry into this incident that threatens to engulf the Middle East in further violence.

The 700 people from around the world aboard the boats were attacked in international waters. It is not clear how many are dead but initial media reports indicate at least nine and many more injured. This totally unacceptable response to what was a humanitarian mission must be unequivocally condemned. This attack warrants more than the very measured response issued by your office stating that the Canadian government regretted the loss of life and “are looking for more information in order to shed light on exactly what happened.”

The humanitarian aid intended for delivery by the flotilla is desperately needed as a result of Israel’s three year blockade of Gaza which has caused terrible suffering for the 1.5 million people of Gaza, half of whom are children under the age of eighteen.

I urge you to condemn the attack and the intolerable conditions the Palestinian people are subjected to as a result of the illegal occupation by Isreal.

Sincerely,
John Gordon
National President

James Clancy has written Stephen Harper urging the Canadian government
to condemn the attack on the flotilla during his meeting with Israeli
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

Right Honourable Stephen Harper, P.C., M.P.
Prime Minister of Canada
Langevin Building
80 Wellington Street
Ottawa, ON, K1A 0A2

Dear Prime Minister Harper,

The recent attack by Israeli Defense Forces on the Gaza Freedom
Flotilla killing human rights activists has rightly outraged most
Canadians and the world. I am writing you, on behalf of the National
Union of Public and General Employees, to condemn this attack during
your meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

This recent attack requires an immediate and strong condemnation from
Canada. For Canada to remain silent on this attack as other countries
and the United Nations criticize this horrific act on unarmed activists
is unconscionable.

Mr. Netanyahu*s presence in Canada following this attack accords you
the opportunity to personally impress upon him our concern over Israeli
aggression. Failure to do so is a betrayal of Canada*s historical
commitment to human rights. Furthermore, I urge you and your government
to recall our ambassador to Israel and call for a meeting of the UN
Security Council to discuss this matter.

Your government in the past has steadfastly refused to criticize the
state of Israel. Surely this action by the Israeli Defense Forces on the
eve of your meeting with the Israeli Prime Minister will end this
silence.

Sincerely yours,

James Clancy
National President
