| It is time to talk about the unthinkable: Israel is using chemical weapons For some time now, people have sent me articles with headlines saying that Israel is using chemical weapons. I have not opened them. In part, because I receive and overwhelming amount of e-mail but also simply because I could not face it. I did not want to hear it. They are probably from unreliable sources anyways" I would tell myself. But now it is time to talk about the unthinkable. The number of reports have multipled. Some are from well known and reliable sources. January 24, 2009 [This article is a significant step in the Canadian media's reporting on Israel. There was a time that only blogs and Arab media reported use of chemical weapons by Israel, then the brave Independent and Guardian from the UK. The next thing he knew, he was being burned alive. "I felt like everything was set on fire around me," el-Jamal, 18, said yesterday. "I felt my body was burning." An instant later, the Palestinian high-school senior blacked out and remembers nothing until many hours later that day, when he was recovering from emergency surgery at Gaza City's Shifa Hospital. By that time, el-Jamal's body was a welter of stitches, clamps and lesions – wounds that continued to riddle his left leg, left hand, chest, right shoulder, and parts of his face yesterday, nearly a week after he ran straight into a wall of liquid fire. The diagnosis: white phosphorus. "We don't normally treat burns like this," said Dr. Nafez Abu Shaban, the head of plastic surgery and the burns unit at Shifa Hospital, who operated on el-Jamal after he showed up, unconscious, at the emergency department Jan. 16.
