Peace Process 2010

Alcanaanite's Blog - Is there anything on which Abbas and Netanyahu can agree?

A must read article that goes through the main issues of the peace process* and the position of Israel and the Palestinians.  Example:

1. Borders:

  •  Abbas:  1949 Armistice line – generally referred to as the June 4, 1967 territories – Gaza, West Bank and East Jerusalem.  Minimum minor exchanges of land can be carefully and sensibly considered.
  •  Netanyahu:  All settlements are part of the state of Israel and must be contiguously annexed.  Israeli military must directly control the Palestinian state’s borders with Jordan.  Otherwise, the state of Israel would not be safe.

*Peace Process:  In the Middle Eastern context, this term used in reference to the process where people who had their land stolen are expected to negotiate the return of a small fraction of it and recognize the right of the thief to exist as a racist entity.

Gush Shalom - Barak's Generous Offers

A short presentation on the so-called "generous" offer that Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak made to Arafat at Camp David in 2000.
Gush Shalom also demolishes the  the incessantly repeated mantra that the Palestinians do not recognize Israel:  "The West Bank and the Gaza Strip, captured in 1967, comprise 22% of pre-1948 Palestine.  When the Palestinians signed the Oslo Agreement in 1993 they agreed to accept only these 22% and recognise  Israel within the Green Line borders. Conceding 78% of the land was a historical Palestinian compromise.

The Myth of the Generous Offer: Distorting the Camp David Negotiations

Although some people describe Israel’s Camp David proposal as practically a return to the 1967 borders, it was far from that. Under the plan, Israel would have withdrawn completely from the small Gaza Strip. But it would annex strategically important and highly valuable sections of the West Bank...
