"NO TIME TO CELEBRATE: Jews Remember the Nakba"

This May, Israel will mark 60 years of statehood. In cities across the U.S. and Canada, established Jewish organizations will sponsor celebrations of "Israeli Independence Day". Meanwhile, Palestinians around the world will mourn 60 years since the Nakba - Arabic for "catastrophe" - of 1948. Sixty years ago, Zionist militias destroyed over 500 Palestinian villages and made more than 800,000 Palestinian people refugees in order to create a Jewish state in a land where the majority was not Jewish. This does not deserve to be celebrated. [Sign petition]

Regional Peace Movement (Israel) - Someone to talk to

The Arab League Initiative calls for an end to the Israeli-Arab conflict and for the full normalization of relationships between Israel and the 22 member states of the Arab League - on condition that Israel withdraws from lands occupied in 1967; allows the establishment of an independent Palestinian state; and accepts a just solution to the Palestinian refugee problem.

Guardian UK - Prominent Jews call for open debate on Israel

A group of prominent British Jews will today declare independence from the country's Jewish establishment, arguing that it puts support for Israel above the human rights of Palestinians.

Guardian UK - No one has the right to speak for British Jews on Israel and Zionism

Jews abroad who are confronted with the same climate are taking similar steps to make their voices heard. The Alliance of Concerned Jewish Canadians has been formed to promote "an alternative public Jewish voice" on Israeli policies. Last July "concerned South African Jews" appealed to "all who share our commitment to a common humanity" to call for Israel to stop its bombardment of Lebanon. In the past few years, Jewish groups speaking out against Israel's violations of human rights have proliferated, notably in the United States, but especially in Israel itself.

ZNet - The Answers Have Changed

One may argue over details in both Carter's book and Pappe's book, but one cannot argue with the facts that the books describe: Between the end of 1947 and the beginning of 1949, a time that Israel calls the War of Independence, close to 800,000 Palestinians were forced into exile and Palestinian identity in Palestine was almost entirely wiped out. Today, Israel continues to deny Palestinian identity, not to mention Palestinian independence both within the boundaries of the State of Israel and within the occupied territories.

The author is an Israeli living in San Diego. He is the son of Israeli General Matityahu Peled.

Jewish Women's Committee to End the Occupation - 'Outrage' at 'morally unconscionable position'

It is no longer tenable to claim “I didn't know” about crimes against humanity.
by The Jewish Women's Committee to End the Occupation (August 3, 2006)

The Jewish Women's Committee to End the Occupation is a voice for peace in the Middle East along with other Jewish and Palestinian women's groups in North America and Israel.

We in Canada are outraged that the Canadian Government and media again choose a morally unconscionable position and stand by silently while Israel perpetrates a massacre of civilians in Gaza, the West Bank and Lebanon. It is a repeat of Sabra and Shatilla, of the massacre at Qana in 1996, with the world leaders looking on.

Jews for a Just Peace (B.C.)

Jews for a Just Peace is an organization of Jews living in Vancouver, BC, Canada whose purpose is to build support in our community for a fair and just solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

A call by concerned South African Jews

As South Africans with a common heritage, both as Jews and as people privileged to be a part of the ending of an evil system of discrimination here, we have learned that the path to peace can never lie in killing and destruction. Peace is only possible when antagonists start talking on the basis of a just solution for all.

Ed Corrigan - Jewish Criticism of Zionism

Mr. Corrigan has a law degree from the University of Windsor and a Master's in political science from the University of Western Ontario. He advises the reader: "This article is not intended to be a comprehensive study of Jewish criticism of Zionism but only an introductory survey. The author owes a debt to many people in the Jewish community for assistance and would like to thank David Finkel and especially Harriet Karchmer for her help with the material on Orthodox Jews.

Jews for Justice for Palestinians (UK)

What is Israel doing? A call by Jews in Britain.

We watch with horror the collective punishment of the people of Gaza. Everything reasonable must be done to secure Corporal Gilad Shalit's safe release but nothing Israel is doing contributes to that aim. Instead, it is using its enormously superior military might to terrorise an entire people.
