Not in OUR Names: A Rebuttal to the Canadian Jewish Congress Response to Proposal GS 2 “Ethical Investment for Peace in Palestine and Israel”
By Diana Ralph, Ph.D. dianar@magma.ca Executive Summary
- Many Jewish Canadians commend fellow Canadians in the UCC for their moral leadership in supporting GS2 --an initiative to bring ethical pressure to bear to end the illegal and protracted Israeli occupation of Palestine.
- Commissioners of the 39 th General Council should wholeheartedly and confidently adopt GS2. In the face of the current invasions of Palestine and Lebanon, it is the least that people who seek peace through justice can do.
- The CJC brief is disrespectful and manipulative to the UCC, threatening a rupture with Jewish Canadians if the UCC approves GS2.
- Jews of conscience oppose the Israeli Occupation and its abuse of Palestinian people.
- Ethical financial pressure on Israel is consistent with UCC moral teachings, and is supported by ever increasing numbers of Jews, Christians, Muslims and secular people around the world, including in Israel.
- The Canadian Jewish Congress does NOT speak for Canadian Jews, but for the Israel Lobby.
- The Israel Lobby has taken over Canadian Jewish Organizations.
- The Israel Lobby is an unholy alliance of Christian and Jewish Zionists, corporate, military and media neo-conservatives which justify the brutal aggression by Israel by silencing democratic debate and undermining structures of civil society such as the UCC. Contrary to The Israel Lobby's claims ;
- Israel is NOT at risk except through its own colonial provocations.
- Israel has an egregious record of human rights violations.
- Jews are no longer at risk of institutional anti-Semitism. Ironically, it is now Muslims who are treated as scapegoats and potentially are at risk of genocide.
- Israel has consistently thwarted legitimate Palestinian peace initiatives.
- To criticize Israeli government policies is not anti-Semitic, just as it is not anti-Canadian to criticize Canadian government policies.
- It is NOT anti-Semitic for the UCC to use investment and divestment to pressure Israel to act ethically
- The CJC Response is Anti-Arab and Islamophobic.
- It is particularly important for the UCC to take a principled stand against this Islamophobic bullying, and exert its financial and moral pressure to help move the Israeli government toward peace, justice, and reconciliation.
