PAJU - Jewish settlers are terrorising Palestinians, says Israeli general

A senior Israeli army commander has warned that unchecked "Jewish terror" against Palestinians in the occupied West Bank threatens to plunge the territory into another conflict.

In unusually outspoken comments, Major General Avi Mizrahi took aim at extremist Israeli settlers, and said the yeshiva, or religious seminary, in Yitzhar, one of the most radical Jewish strongholds in the West Bank, should be closed, calling it a source of terror against Palestinians.

The Telegraph (UK) - Holocaust survivors warn of stirrings of neo-fascism

...there is growing unease in Israel after the message about renting homes was effectively endorsed by 300 rabbis. The rabbis, some of them of senior rank, signed up to an edict issued last month that declared: "It is forbidden in the Torah to sell a house or a field in the land of Israel to a foreigner."

With its undertones reminiscent of 1930s Berlin, where Jews were relegated to second-class status and denied the right to rent German-owned properties, the pronouncement has appalled Holocaust survivors.

[The following article by Israeli journalist Gideon Levy enlightens us on the realities of day to day life in Israel.   Israel is portrayed by its defenders as a democracy but it is a democracy without a constitution, without defined borders and without a charter of rights.  It is a democracy where racism is widely accepted as necessary to maintain control  and "purity" by the Jewish population.]

Haaretz - Safed, a war story: A campaign of racism and anti-Arab incitement is turning one of Israel's holy cities into a ticking bomb

The telephone rings. "Hello, this is Mustafa, I'm calling about the apartment." The response comes quickly and emphatically: "No, it's already been rented." Or, "I only rent to women," or "I only rent to families." Or, in an angry tone: "Heaven forbid, do you want to stop me from reading the Torah on Shabbat," or "I'm afraid of the rabbis."......

Abu Salah has already resided in four apartments in Safed. At present, he is compelled to commute each day from his village because it is nearly impossible for Arabs to find a room to rent in the city. Out of the college's 900 Arab students, he says, only a few live in rented apartments, not including the 120 who live in the dormitories.

.....He also has stories of residents spitting at Arab students, and of students entering stores and being told that they were "closed." He has heard chants on streets, like: "An Arab is a son of a bitch." I asked him how he would respond were someone to call him a dirty Arab. "I would ask him, am I really dirty? I take a shower twice a day and dress better than you," Abu Salah quips.

The Jerusalem Fund - Settlers Torch Mosque... Again

RAMALLAH, West Bank — Arsonists torched a mosque in a Palestinian village in the West Bank on Monday, scrawling "revenge" on a wall in Hebrew and charring copies of the Muslim holy book in a blaze that threatened to stoke new tensions over deadlocked Mideast peacemaking....

It should be noted that arson is one of the most often occurring types of settler attacks. From Jan. 2009 through Aug. 2010 we coded 84 instances of arson perpetrated by Israeli settlers in the West Bank - that's nearly 4.2 instances of arson per month!. These range from attacks that set fire to mosques, olive groves and other structures like houses or farm buildings.

Haaretz - Shas spiritual leader: Abbas and Palestinians should perish

"Abu Mazen and all these evil people should perish from this world," Rabbi Ovadia was quoted as saying during his weekly sermon at a synagogue near his Jerusalem home. "God should strike them with a plague, them and these Palestinians."

Max Blumenthal.com - The “Summer Camp Of Destruction:” Israeli High Schoolers Assist The Razing Of A Bedouin Town

AL-ARAKIB, ISRAEL — On July 26, Israeli police demolished 45 buildings in the unrecognized Bedouin village of al-Arakib, razing the entire village to the ground to make way for a Jewish National Fund forest....
One of the most troubling aspects of the destruction of al-Arakib was a report by CNNthat the hundreds of Israeli riot police who stormed the village were accompanied by “busloads of cheering civilians.” Who were these civilians and why didn’t CNN or any outlet investigate further?

Tikum Olam - Don’t Like an Israel Palestinian MK? Burn Him

One of my Israeli readers brings word of a truly ghoulish Israeli right-wing Facebook group, I Too Want to Burn MK Talib A-Sana. It seems that A-Sana, the Israeli Palestinian elected representative of the Raam-Tal Arab nationalist party has asked the officers of the Knesset for permission to travel to Gaza to witness conditions under which the residents live while under Israeli siege.

Provocative? Yes. But who’d a thunk there’d be Israelis nutty enough to advocate publicly in Facebook burning the guy at the stake for his alleged sins?

Globe & Mail - A hostile takeover of Zionism

[This is an important article about the growing power of fanatical ultra-Orthodox Jews in Israel and how it could dramatically change Israel into a theocracy.]

Ironically, considering these religious leaders have made such use of the democratic process, they continue to say democracy is not consistent with Halacha. “In many ways these guys are closer to Islamic fundamentalists than to anything else,” Prof. Ben Yehuda said. They also do not shrink from violence.

Prof. Ben Yehuda's research found that violence is the number-one criminal infraction among Haredim. He also found that most of that violence is for political purposes.

Haaretz editorial - Defeat settler terror

[Israeli newspaper Haaretz reports what we never hear about in the North American media.]

The unrestrained rampages by the settlers, and the insults they heaped on soldiers and policemen
who participated in yesterday's evacuation of the "Federman Farm" near Kiryat Arba, reveal the lawless and dangerous nature of the settlers' rejectionist front.

Inter alia, opponents of the evacuation called for "revenge attacks" against the security forces; told IDF soldiers that "you should all be defeated by your enemies, you should all become [kidnapped soldier] Gilad Shalit, you should all be killed, you should all be slaughtered, because that's what you deserve"; and set a "price tag" for the evacuation in the form of assaults on IDF and Palestinian property.

Guardian UK - A bitter harvest

The olive harvest is in full swing at the moment; so too are the
settlers' clubs and the soldiers' batons, as they do their level best
to impede the farmers' attempts to harvest their meagre crops the
length and breadth of the Occupied Territories. I went to the tiny
hamlet of Izzmut this week, unhappily situated alongside the
settlement of Elon Moreh, from whose borders emanate almost daily
attacks by settlers hell bent on disrupting the proceedings.

The Guardian UK - Israeli peace advocate attacked

A prominent Israeli professor and peace advocate was injured
yesterday when a pipe bomb blew up outside his house in what police
believe was an attack by right-wing Jewish extremists.

Zeev Sternhell, a political scientist at Hebrew University, was
wounded in the leg when the bomb exploded as he stepped out of his
front door to close the garden gate in Jerusalem.

Police found posters in the area offering a reward of around
£170,000 to anyone who kills a member of Peace Now, a well-known
Israeli group which campaigns against the occupation. Sternhell has
long been a Peace Now supporter.

Ghrab park in Beit Sahour Wednesday evening.

same site, started to provoke the worshippers and asked them to

Times Online- Settler gang pushes Palestinian boy off roof

Beatings of Palestinians by radical religious settlers, protected by
the Israeli army and police, are a common occurrence in this dangerous
city, where Jewish settlements nudge into the heart of a community of
about 120,000 Arabs. What happened next was shocking even by the
violent standards of Hebron however.
