What makes this incident worse is the fact that Muslims were invited as guests to a synagogue where they were accused of being supporters of extremism," said Tarek Fatah. Toronto Star: Détente attempt sparks anger At an evening of dialogue for Muslim-Jewish understanding, remarks by Israel's consul general have prompted the Muslim Canadian Congress to call for an apology, and it has asked Foreign Affairs Minister Pierre Pettigrew to investigate the statements and seek an explanation. ACTION ALERT: May 14, 2005 - Ask Foreign Affairs Minister Pierre Pettigrew to censure Israeli Consul General Ya'acov Brosh for his comments at the recent Daniel Pearl Dialogue for Muslim-Jewish Understanding, held at the Temple Har Zion Synagogue in Toronto. See sample letters below. Please copy your member of Parliament and all the party leaders: Pierre Pettigrew - pettigrew.p@parl.gc.ca Paul Martin - martin.p@parl.gc.ca Jack Layton - layton.j@parl.gc.ca Stephen Harper - harper.s@parl.gc.ca Gilles Duccepe - duccepe.g@parl.gc.ca It would also be helpful if you could send us a blind copy of your email. Letters do not have to be long. Just a sentence or two will do it. For example: Dear Minister Pettigrew, Racist comments are unacceptable. I call upon you to censure Israeli Consul General Ya'acov Brosh for his comments about Muslims made at the recent Daniel Pearl Dialogue event in Toronto. or Dear Minister Pettigrew Please demand the resignation of Israeli Consul General Ya'acov Brosh for his racist comments against Muslim made at a recent event in Toronto. Such comments do not reflect Canadian values and must not be tolerated. or Hon. Pierre Pettigrew, Israeli Consul General Ya'acov Brosh recently stated that "most terrorists today are Muslims and that the majority of Muslims support extremism." These comments were made at the Daniel Pearl Dialogue for Muslim-Jewish Understanding, held at the Temple Har Zion Synagogue in Toronto and sponsored by the Friends of Simon Wiesenthal Center. In December of last year, a similar speech was made by an invited keynote speaker at a conference also sponsored by the Friends of Simon Wiesenthal Center and held at the University of Toronto. At that event, the speaker stated that "Islamic terrorism is based on Islam," and that Islam was "immoderate" and "totalitarian." In view of repeated speeches of this nature, I demand that you and your department immediately censure Mr. Brosh. The comments foster hate and bigotry against Canadian Muslims. Mr. Brosh's is an Israeli official in Canada. His comments cannot be allowed to stand without a response from the Canadian government. Yours sincerely, Your Comments |
