| August 28, 2004 Nepean family goes on hunger strike in solidarity with the Palestinian prisoners From: Clara Morgan Sent: Friday, August 27, 2004 11:22 AM To: 'letters@GlobeAndMail.ca' Dear Madam/Sir, Unfortunately for the Palestinian people living inside Israel and in the West Bank and Gaza, the current hunger strike by Palestinian prisoners is barely covered by the Western news media. I am a subscriber to the Globe and Mail and read your paper daily. Even though I have read a very brief article on the 4th or 5th page about the hunger strike, I would like to see an in-depth article that truly examines the treatment of Palestinian prisoners in Israeli prisons. The open ended hunger strike by the Palestinian prisoners began on August 15, 2004 to contest the inhumane treatment of Palestinian prisoners under the hands of the Israelis. The prisoners have a list of demands for fair and humane treatment in Israeli prisons defined under international law, Israeli law and Israeli prison regulations. They are demanding that abuse of prisoners and their families ends immediately. As a Canadian citizen who is privileged to live in a democratic country that follows the rule of law and has a Charter of Rights and Freedoms that it upholds, I feel very lucky. When I read about Palestinian suffering under the Israeli occupation, I am filled with sadness and anger that the world continues to look the other way, without condemning Israel. My family is going on a hunger strike in support of the Palestinian prisoners and Palestinian people. My children, aged 11, 9, and 7, my husband and I will not eat anything on Monday, August 30th. When I told my children about the suffering of the Palestinian people and asked them if they would do for one day what these prisoners have done for the last 15 days, they said “Of course.” They even wanted to stop eating for more than one day. On August 30th, everyone in the world is being asked to go on a hunger strike in solidarity with the Palestinian people. This family in Nepean, Ontario will also join this peaceful resistance.
