Israel singled itself out

The following is a letter to the editor sent to the Toronto Star in response to their editorial of July 5th, titled Singling out Israel.

It is not the international community, CUPE Ontario or the United Church that have singled out Israel. Israel has singled itself out, putting itself above international law and refusing to respect treaties that were formulated in the aftermath of World War II.

The only state that was created by a United Nations resolution has systematically ignored all subsequent resolutions, including the part that puts the implementation of previous resolutions as a condition of its membership in the United Nations.

There are certainly other states that have atrocious human rights records. However, Israel claims to be the "only democracy" in the region, not "more democratic" than other states. Its actions must match its claim. They do not when they relate to Palestinians and to the military occupation of others' land.

International sanctions helped end the South African occupation of Namibia. Those who are now fighting for Israel right or wrong were then on the side of the occupied and, in a way, against Israel, then an ally of apartheid South Africa.

Clearly, those who support divestment are the ones who are consistent, who are keeping up the good fight. The others have sold out.

Bahija Réghaï,

Ottawa, Ontario
