Reader Comments on this Letter February 21, 2005 Hon. Pierre Pettigrew, Minister of Foreign Affairs Foreign Affairs Canada 125 Sussex Drive Ontario K1A 0G2 Minister, Stop Fighting ... back! This is what the world has been telling the Palestinians since 1948, the year when Israel was established, by force, on Palestinian lands confiscated, robbed or sold under pressure. This is also what you Mr. Minister, have been saying with a stronger tone, since a number of Zionists and their friends formed the Liberal Parliamentarians for Israel for the sole purpose of shifting our Canadian foreign policy in favour of Israel. You and your Party have allowed our democracy to be hijacked. You and your Party have allowed our values to be sold. While the stack of ignored UN resolutions condemning Israel for not living up to its commitments gets higher, our Canadian government is repeatedly cheering Israel on for doing so. And the cheers are getting louder! Our government officials, over the years, have conveniently turned a blind eye to Israel's ignored UN resolutions, Israel's ongoing building of an "apartheid wall", Israel's ongoing building of Jewish-only settlements, Israel's humiliation of Palestinians on a daily basis, Israel's ongoing genocide and ethnic cleansing, Israel's continuous destruction of Palestinian homes and crops, and have been consistently telling the Palestinians: Stop Fighting ... back! Negotiate, give up some more land, ignore the hundreds of thousands of Palestinian refugees around the world, give up your dignity and forgive the daily humiliation and torture you are being subjected to, give in to this mighty power whose blood covered hand we are holding and are short of kissing! They have a right to exist and you don't! Your government is no longer a representative of the Canada that I grew to love. You and your Party have been bought. Your government is now shamelessly flaunting your biased stand when it comes to the Middle East instead of looking for genuine alternatives based on core Canadian values, in this case Justice first and righting the wrongs instead of pushing the oppressed to accept the wrongs of the oppressor. Canadians do not want to be oppressors hence our pride for not joining the U.S. invasion of Iraq, and the ensuing re-election of a Liberal government. Canadians elected you to stand up for the rights of the oppressed and not to tell them to Stop Fighting .. back. I completely agree with the content of your letter. G. Behrens Ottawa *************** Sent: Thursday, February 24, 2005 11:35 PM Subject: Letter to Mr. Pettigrew Regarding the claims of this letter that ministers are hijacking democracy, frankly, one disgruntled person does not represent an affront to democracy. To have this person claim to be the sole representative of Canadian majority opinion, and then make a direct request to a cabinet minister on this basis, is the real affront. The advantage of living in a democracy is that this person can have her voice heard, the disadvantage is that her voice will not be heard louder than anyone else's. Jason Hirsch Your Comments |
